Are your deliveries 100% plastic-free?

Whenever we can, we avoid using plastic.

Our produce is predominantly packed loose, because it often comes in it’s own packaging - bananas don’t need to be re-packaged in a plastic bag, for example!

Real Food Grocer are proud to be as close to plastic-free as we possibly can. Not only do we deliver your goodies in a reusable cardboard boxes, when absolutely necessary, we bag in compostable/recyclable paper bags instead of single-use plastic produce bags (think grapes or mushrooms - items that are tricky to pack loose). Every single customer who shops with us saves approximately 497 single use plastic bags from being used and ending up in landfill.

Real Food Grocer only deliver items in plastic for 2 reasons:

  1. We are required to do so by food safety law - for example, cut items, like half pumpkins or quarter cabbages, are wrapped in plastic film (due to food safety regulations).
  2. We do not have the buying power to source an alternative without plastic packaging. All efforts are made for any plastics we deliver to be recyclable.

We are always looking for ways to reduce our plastic use. For example, in the warmer months, we source locally-grown Victorian berries, which we are able to have packaged in plastic-free, compostable Biocane punnets. We can also re-use these punnets before we send them to the compost bin, so be sure to send them back to us in your returnable delivery box each week!

While plastic punnets are recyclable, this is the last step in the chain of sustainability - we always look to reduce and reuse first. Our compostable punnets are made from rapidly renewable sugarcane pulp, a by-product of the sugar refining industry, mitigating the requirement for any plastic whatsoever (when possible - we do still rely on plastic punnets when it’s not possible to use compostable).
